International Womens Day: Spotlight on Martyna Piatkowska

For International Women's Day, we are celebrating women's achievements and, in particular, spotlighting our brilliant new generation of solicitors who qualified at the start of the year. We begin with Martyna Piatkowska, a Family Solicitor specialising in Child Arrangements and injunction proceedings. Here Martyna gives her thoughts and motivations for becoming a solicitor and her aspirations for the future.

What made you want to become a solicitor?

I decided to go into law because it presented both intellectual challenges and opportunities to help people who need legal assistance to better their lives, often by addressing extremely difficult and persistent legal issues. Working in family law also means that you are there for your clients to help them fairly present their story within the justice system, which is a very crucial and often cathartic process for them in the context of their legal position. It is a privilege to often witness how our legal assistance and legal advice take away a lot of stress from our clients and lead to a significant positive change in our clients' everyday lives.

Martyna's journey

I had studied law in Poland and Austria, before I moved to the UK in 2015. As a law student at the University of the West of England, I visited a university job fair where I found out about Watkins Solicitors. I decided to apply for a paralegal job and was successful. I have been working in the firm for over five years now.

What are your hopes and aspirations for the future?

In the future, I will expand my current expertise to include also other areas of family law in order to be able to address my clients' legal issues in an even more holistic way. I will shortly receive training in surrogacy law.

What do you think sets you apart?

I have been praised by my clients for a professional and empathetic approach which often makes them feel at ease and trust that their matter is handled with utmost care. I also speak Polish which is my native language.
