Watkins Solicitors Partner with University of Bristol to Offer Free Legal Support for Parents Facing School Exclusions
Through this collaboration, families can access guidance on appeals, parental rights, and the Independent Review Panel (IRP) process, helping them to feel more informed.
Permanent exclusions can be distressing and often happen with little notice. Many parents are unsure of their rights, how to request a review, or what to expect from the IRP hearing. This partnership helps bridge that gap by offering practical advice from specialist education law solicitors at Watkins Solicitors, working alongside University of Bristol law students under professional supervision.
Students at the University of Bristol Law Clinic can assist families by:
• Explaining the IRP process
• Helping parents prepare for the hearing
• Drafting written statements
• Organising and submitting supporting evidence
All advice is reviewed and approved by supervising solicitors to ensure it meets professional standards. This initiative allows families who might otherwise struggle to access legal advice to receive reliable, accurate, and compassionate support during what can be a very challenging time.
Beverley Watkins, Managing Partner at Watkins Solicitors, said:
“Every child deserves fair treatment and every parent deserves to be heard. For families facing exclusion, the process can feel isolating and confusing. By partnering with the University of Bristol, we are hoping to help provide some support to families in a difficult situation.’
If your organisation works with schools, families, or community groups who may benefit from this service, we welcome referrals so those most in need can access timely support.
