Watkins Solicitors Share SEND Expertise at Blatchington Court Trust's Parent and Professionals Conference 2025

Watkins Solicitors were delighted to take part in Blatchington Court Trust’s Parent and Professionals Conference 2025, held at the University of Sussex on Monday 22 September. The annual event brings together parents, carers, charities, and professionals working with children and young people with visual impairments, creating a vital space for learning and collaboration.
The conference opened with an inspiring talk by Fern Lulham, broadcaster, BBC Radio 4 In Touch producer, psychotherapist and public speaker. Fern’s session, “Seeing Through Their Eyes: Understanding, Supporting and Believing in Your Child”, encouraged parents and professionals alike to reframe challenges and focus on empowerment. Her personal insights set a powerful tone for the day, combining lived experience with practical strategies for supporting children and families.
Alongside Fern, the programme featured sessions from experts across education, health, and support services, ensuring families left with both encouragement and practical knowledge.
Watkins Solicitors’ Education Solicitor, Emma Thompson, delivered a specialist session on Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and legal rights. Emma explained the key steps in the EHCP process, highlighted what to do when plans are delayed or inadequate, and shared strategies for appeals and tribunal preparation. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the session as both practical and empowering. Several families commented that they had learned new aspects of the law and felt more confident about securing support for their children.
The conference also provided opportunities for networking. Emma met with representatives from the Royal National College for the Blind, New College Worcester, Look Charity, and Victa, strengthening connections with organisations that play a central role in supporting children and young people with visual impairments.
Watkins Solicitors are grateful to Blatchington Court Trust for the invitation to contribute to this important event. We remain committed to supporting families navigating the SEND system and look forward to future opportunities to share our expertise and collaborate with the wider community.
